Hazakura Ways, developed by Relax Gaming and released in January 2022, takes its name from a distinctly Japanese concept referring to the seasonal transition when cherry blossom petals fall away and fresh foliage begins to emerge. This thematic foundation positions the game within a broader lineage of cherry blossom-inspired slots, though the execution here follows a unique mechanical path. Players enter a heavily botanical environment, with the game grid surrounded by flowering branches that establish the visual identity from the moment the reels load.
Game Grid and Symbol Arrangement
The slot operates across six reels with four rows, creating 4,096 distinct winning combinations when symbols connect left to right starting from the first reel. This design approach matters because matching symbols trigger payouts regardless of their vertical positioning on the screen once they align horizontally, a structural choice that becomes significantly more powerful when combined with the game’s expanding mechanics. The lower-value symbols comprise the traditional playing card suits—diamonds, clubs, spades, and hearts—alongside a star symbol, each returning 1x to 2x the bet when landing six across a spin. The premium tier includes imagery reflecting the game’s aesthetic: swords, pendant daggers, a robed figure representing a martial master, and a heroic female character. These premium icons reward players with payouts ranging from 3x to 50x the wager for six-of-a-kind combinations. The wild symbol, rendered as a stylized cherry blossom with a luminous quality, substitutes for all regular symbols except the scatter, which appears as a lantern icon.
Mathematics and Return Rates
Hazakura Ways sits within the high-volatility category, meaning players should expect extended stretches without significant returns punctuated by occasional larger payouts. The baseline return-to-player rate stands at 96.37%, which rises slightly to 97% when utilizing the bonus purchase option. Stake settings range from 0.15 to 30 credits, providing flexibility across different bankroll sizes, though the game’s mathematical intensity naturally favors more conservative betting from cost-conscious players. During testing sessions, the game’s behavior matched its high-volatility classification, swinging dramatically between rounds where bonus acquisitions delivered minimal returns and sequences that generated substantially more satisfying outcomes. The maximum possible payout reaches 50,000x the initial wager, representing the upper boundary of potential returns Relax Gaming has established for this title.
Special Features and Gameplay Mechanics
The base game incorporates a random activation element where, at the start of any standard spin, the game may designate one symbol from the paying tier to become a special symbol for that round. When this designated symbol appears, it automatically expands downward to occupy all remaining vertical spaces on its reel, then triggers payouts from any position rather than requiring the traditional left-to-right alignment. Free spins are triggered by landing three to six lantern scatters, which grant ten, fifteen, twenty, or twenty-five spinning rounds respectively. Before the free spin sequence begins, the game selects another random symbol to serve as the expanding symbol throughout the entire bonus phase, maintaining consistency across all free spin rounds. Additional scatters landing during free spins award supplementary spinning rounds, potentially extending the feature.
Players can enhance their regular stake by activating the Mega Bet option, which increases the bet size by fifty percent. In exchange, this elevated wager tier raises the probability of triggering both the random base game feature and the free spin bonus. Notably, when Mega Bet is active, wild symbols themselves become capable of expanding to fill their entire reel whenever the designated symbol initiates its own expansion, compounding the winning potential during these moments. For those seeking immediate access to free spins without waiting for natural triggering, the Buy Bonus feature permits players to purchase entry to the free spin round by wagering eighty times their current stake. This purchase option can be executed with or without Mega Bet active, offering either a standard free spin experience or an enhanced version featuring expanding wildcards.
Assessment and Practical Performance
Relax Gaming delivers a mechanically robust game that operates effectively beneath a somewhat understated visual presentation. The core tension within Hazakura Ways involves strategic decision-making around the Mega Bet and bonus purchase options. While the combination of expanding symbols and wilds carrying full-reel expansion capabilities appears theoretically compelling, actual play revealed that wildcards emerged infrequently enough to limit their practical impact. Simultaneously, designated symbols frequently landed in lower reel positions, restricting their capacity to expand downward when space above was limited. The free spin sequence mirrors principles seen in games like Book of Ra regarding anywhere-position payouts, while introducing complexity through the additional 4,096 winning pathways. This abundance of potential combinations creates an intellectually engaging dynamic, though also makes calculating exact expected values during spins a cognitively demanding exercise. The free spin mechanic proved genuinely difficult to crack during testing, requiring both symbol cooperation and fortunate positioning to deliver meaningful returns. However, when conditions align favorably, the expanding symbol mechanic generates disproportionately substantial outcomes, justifying the fifty-thousand-fold maximum win ceiling.
In practical terms, Hazakura Ways represents another technically proficient release from a developer known for ambitious mathematical design. Though the aesthetic presentation lacks visual excitement compared to other contemporary slots, the underlying architecture creates genuine engagement potential. Players encounter a game that refuses easy wins while rewarding patience and favorable variance with significant returns. The mechanical framework feels polished and intentional rather than derivative, distinguishing this title within Relax Gaming’s broader catalog despite thematic similarities to established cherry blossom properties. For players seeking high-volatility experiences with meaningful technical depth, Hazakura Ways delivers on its mechanical promises even as its appearance suggests otherwise.
