The Malta Gaming Authority licence, and what it is worth to you
The MGA is the strongest of the multi-market licences and the one most commonly held by operators serving Europe. It is not a quality mark, a badly run casino with an MGA licence is still a badly run casino, but it is the licence most likely to produce an outcome when a complaint reaches it.
Segregated player funds
The requirement that matters most and gets discussed least. MGA licensees must hold player balances separately from operating capital, so those balances are intended to survive the company failing. Under a licence without that requirement, an insolvent operator's collapse can take player balances with it.
Complaints and ADR
The MGA accepts complaints directly from players and requires licensees to engage with an alternative dispute resolution body. It has a documented history of fining and suspending operators rather than merely corresponding with them. The realistic limits: processes take months, and it mediates rather than acting as a small-claims court. It will not recover funds from a company that has already collapsed.
What an MGA licence does not do
It does not override your national rules. If you live in a country that licenses domestically, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, an MGA licence does not enrol the operator in your national self-exclusion register or your local ADR scheme. In several of those markets an operator serving you on an MGA licence alone is outside the local framework entirely.
Verifying it
